A Note from Kate
Whether you’re a realist, an abstract expressionist, a seasoned plein air painter or a complete novice, working on location to gather motifs for future work is one of the most gratifying ways to experience travel– taking in the visual world with intention.
While we’re together in Oaxaca, or anywhere for that matter, I suggest that you keep a sketchbook and pencil handy to jot down ideas and record small passages of light and dark that grab your attention. Include some color notes or mark the intensity of the light, the arc of a perfect line, or the energy of a place with the vitality and sensitivity of your own mark making.
In a place like Oaxaca, resplendent with the history of ancient Zapotec and Maya cultures, visual diversity, design elements, and relics abound. Try a rubbing from a carved wall, make a line drawing of an ancient symbol or deity, or sketch the arcade and bustle of the Zocalo. Whatever you do, fill your sketchbook with your impression of this place, at this time, in your life and take with you a richer experience of Oaxaca than all but the most ambitious of tourists.
Some of you will fill a sketchbook for later, others will create a suite of prints, some will return home with a woodcut and a suntan; it is my hope that all of you go home with the essence of this place deep within you.
NUTS & BOLTS: For seasoned printmakers as well as beginners, we will discover hidden treasures throughout the city to draw from, then work on linocuts and woodcuts at Taller Bambu – a wonderful Print Shop in the heart of town. We’ll also spend time meeting contemporary Oaxacan printmakers and immersing ourselves deeply in the work of Oaxaca’s long tradition of Printmaking.
Join Destination Arts in exploring the artistic and cultural heart of southern Mexico. Rich in colonial architecture, ancient ruins, and fine food, Oaxaca is secure in its identity as the City of Arts. Encircled by the majestic Sierra Madre Mountains, Oaxaca sits at 5,000 feet on a fertile plateau with a spring-like climate year round. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this fascinating city was founded by the Spanish in 1532 in an area inhabited for centuries by 17 unique indigenous groups. The historic city center, where we will be staying, is teeming with galleries, crafts vendors, a native market, and some of the most gorgeous colonial architecture in Mexico.
The tour will include visits to pre-Colombian ruins such as Monte Alban and Mitla as well as various significant artistic sites in and around the valley of Oaxaca. Colonial streets, parks, the botanic gardens, and Oaxaca’s famed markets will be your classroom as you find your way around the city. In Oaxaca, you will find some of the best food in all of Mexico. Destination Arts guests will also have an option to participate in the renowned Seasons of My Heart Cooking School with chef and cookbook author Susana Trilling.
Hotel Casa del Sótano, a peaceful refuge in busy Oaxaca City, is built around a landscaped and leafy central courtyard. The hotel’s location is ideal — removed from the bustle of the Zocaló and Santo Domingo, but a short walk to both. The roof terrace is truly wonderful, providing one of the best views in town. Each of the unique guest rooms is clean and comfortable, with tasteful local decorations and a private bath. A delicious breakfast is served on the beautiful terrace daily, as well as a few of our dinners. You can have a cup of great Oaxacan coffee or chocolate or a light lunch with a view anytime.
