A Note from Dan:
Oaxaca, Mexico. Resplendent with the graphic history of ancient Zapotec and Maya cultures, visual diversity, design elements, and relics surround you. This rich tapestry of color, texture, and shape will awaken the artist in you as we spend the week working to capture the essence of this magical location.
Whether you’re an amateur looking to understand your camera and improve your compositions, or a seasoned pro with a desire to reignite your creativity and gain increased technical knowledge, working on location in a place like Oaxaca is one of the most gratifying ways to experience travel — taking in the visual world with intention.
NUTS & BOLTS: For seasoned photographers as well as beginners. We will embark on a journey toward greater visual awareness – composition, light, color, tone – and technical proficiency – control of many of the tools built into your digital camera. Daily class time will focus your image making and daily critique will build both understanding of your images and confidence with your camera.
Join Destination Arts in exploring the artistic and cultural heart of southern Mexico. Rich in colonial architecture, ancient ruins, and fine food, Oaxaca is secure in its identity as the City of Arts. Encircled by the majestic Sierra Madre Mountains, Oaxaca sits at 5,000 feet on a fertile plateau with a spring-like climate year round. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this fascinating city was founded by the Spanish in 1532 in an area inhabited for centuries by 17 unique indigenous groups. The historic city center, where we will be staying, is teeming with galleries, crafts vendors, a native market, and some of the most gorgeous colonial architecture in Mexico.
The tour will include visits to pre-Colombian ruins such as Monte Alban and Mitla as well as various significant artistic sites in and around the valley of Oaxaca. Colonial streets, parks, the botanic gardens, and Oaxaca’s famed markets will be your classroom as you find your way around the city. In Oaxaca, you will find some of the best food in all of Mexico. Destination Arts guests will also have an option to participate in the renowned Seasons of My Heart Cooking School with chef and cookbook author Susana Trilling.
Hotel Casa del Sótano, a peaceful refuge in busy Oaxaca City, is built around a landscaped and leafy central courtyard. The hotel’s location is ideal — removed from the bustle of the Zocaló and Santo Domingo, but a short walk to both. The roof terrace is truly wonderful, providing one of the best views in town. Each of the unique guest rooms is clean and comfortable, with tasteful local decorations and a private bath. A delicious breakfast is served on the beautiful terrace daily, as well as a few of our dinners. You can have a cup of great Oaxacan coffee or chocolate or a light lunch with a view anytime.
