A Note from James & Anne
Spend a glorious week steeped in world class instruction, uke jams, group singing and getting to know your way around your Ukulele with James Hill and Anne Janelle. After breakfast, start the workshop day with a group lesson, arrange a private or semi private lesson with James and Anne, and practice harmonies with the Destination Arts Family Choir!
This workshop is open to all levels, so come and let James and Anne meet you where you are and take you where you want to go with the world’s most versatile and sociable instrument. Spontaneous jams around every corner – bring your ukulele, jam books, and music stand and clips if you have them. If not, bring your uke, a sense of adventure and have the time of your life with James, Anne, and the Destination Arts Crew.
Join Destination Arts in exploring the artistic and cultural heart of southern Mexico. Rich in colonial architecture, ancient ruins, and fine food, Oaxaca is secure in its identity as the City of Arts. Encircled by the majestic Sierra Madre Mountains, Oaxaca sits at 5,000 feet on a fertile plateau with a spring-like climate year round. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this fascinating city was founded by the Spanish in 1532 in an area inhabited for centuries by 17 unique indigenous groups. The historic city center, where we will be staying, is teeming with galleries, crafts vendors, a native market, and some of the most gorgeous colonial architecture in Mexico.
The tour will include visits to pre-Colombian ruins such as Monte Alban and Mitla as well as various significant artistic sites in and around the valley of Oaxaca. Colonial streets, parks, the botanic gardens, and Oaxaca’s famed markets will be your classroom as you find your way around the city. In Oaxaca, you will find some of the best food in all of Mexico. Destination Arts guests will also have an option to participate in the renowned Seasons of My Heart Cooking School with chef and cookbook author Susana Trilling.
Hotel Casa del Sótano, a peaceful refuge in busy Oaxaca City, is built around a landscaped and leafy central courtyard. The hotel’s location is ideal — removed from the bustle of the Zocaló and Santo Domingo, but a short walk to both. The roof terrace is truly wonderful, providing one of the best views in town. Each of the unique guest rooms is clean and comfortable, with tasteful local decorations and a private bath. A delicious breakfast is served on the beautiful terrace daily, as well as a few of our dinners. You can have a cup of great Oaxacan coffee or chocolate or a light lunch with a view anytime.
